What if the max damage on a bow is 50-65 in GW2? What if you get a 50% penetration bonus if your stamina is above 75%? What if marksmanship doesn't exist anymore? What if bows don't exist anymore?

Now you're getting the jist on why actually USING GW1 weapons in GW2 may not be a good idea.

Well, it's all speculation, but in general I agree with you. Given that the game mechanics of GW2 might be a bit different, and given the general level of whining by GW players, Anet would be silly to firmly commit to something that is still two years away.

That said, here is a fairly simple scenario:

1) I put something in the hall, say a Chaos Axe
2) My great-great grand-daughter takes out the Chaos Axe. It has a unique skin that is somewhat similar to the current Chaos Axe, but of course is neater in that the graphics are much nicer in GW2. The stats might be completely different, as the game mechanics in GW2 might not be the same as in GW1, but the skin looks similar. I now feel L337 and am less inclined to rage quit.

This scenario should work because Anet does not like grind, and would certainly be amenable to giving out max items, which we all know do not provide any competitive advantage in GW.

So you don't transfer the actual item, but rather unlock a similar skinned item. The skin wouldn't be exactly the same, but of the same family (ie. Axe=Axe)

I recon its like a giant trophy room and you get trophys that are unique to the title. higher tiers means large trophys i recon.
Then your gw2 character can inherit the titles and other stuff......

i think the armor thing is something like you unlock the say equivilant armor like if you put 15k armor in you get gw2's 15k equiviant

The Problems with bringing over a weapon has nothing to do with customization... there are multiple reasons.

~They would be graphically inferior to every other weapon in the game...

~There is no Guarentee that your profession/weapon will even be created in GW2 ...no assasins in GW2= can't bring my dagger... no hammers in GW2= can't bring my hammer.

~The stats of a 'max' weapon will most likely change anyway considering the new take on level cap...

~You can't expect the designers to take the 100+ weapon skins and add them to a completely new game just for you...?

...from a game designers perspective... it is just not going to happen.

and BTW... when has it EVER been indicated that there was a chest to put things in?? It has most clearly been stated that you build monuments...not 'put things in'

Sure... what's unusual about that if I may ask? It's an old uninsciptable bow from way back, pre-Factions even.

I'll have to do the screenshot Monday... no access to game right now.

As I understood it, Platinum items only dropped in Factions. Perhaps you got it from a chest there and forgot.

You can answer me in a pm or not at all. Sorry to the OP for the off-topic.

Edit: Looked em up:

Platinum Longbow

Wow, I guess I could be mistaken... could have sworn I've had this thing longer than that. Screenshot won't help then... I don't have any from when I found it.

Thanks for the clarification. I might lose sleep over this due to the inner turmoil.

Could Wiki be wrong?

EDIT: No, it's me.

Until we know what exactly each Hall will do for your future GW2 chars, I don't see a point in putting in any effort - above and beyond your regular gaming - into titles.

I expect there will be something like a HoM npc who will ask, "Which title of yours would you like to build a HoM towards?" You pick the title and reap the rewards on your char in GW2.

I expect that the protector titles will provide a very tiny reward while a difficult title will provide a better reward. However, if the rewards from the HoM are too large it will turn off new players who don't have GW. The rewards might even be restricted to things like weapon or armor skin unlocks for pvp.

Thanks to your efforts in GW, your character in GW2--the descendant of your GW character--will have access to exclusive titles, companions, pets, armor, and weapons. None of the unlockable content will give you a huge edge over other players, but it will provide you with a nice badge of honor that brands you as an Old School Guild Wars pro and personalizes the gameplay for you just that little bit more. Personally, I think something that nods to the old fans without screwing the new ones is a great idea.

Way I see it, when they talk of armor 'not' being transferable, yet talk of rewarding players who transfer their favourite armor, what will happen is a sort of "your grandfather was buried with his XXXXX armor, and if you wish, i can make you a replica of it etc.". So you'll need to craft your armor again, but you'll have access to designs you wouldn't normally in GW2.

@JoeKnowMo, that's pretty much what I'm expecting. Except that instead of a separate hall for each title, it's various monuments in a single hall.

So say Saxifrage Junior walks into a Hall built for her by Granny Saxifrage, and there's several statues or whatever. She can walk up to each statue to get stuff. One statue allows her to choose a nontransferable Lightbringer's weapon. Another summons a crafter who can make armor with the pricey Guardian skin (there would have been a discount if Granny had been Legendary). Another gives her three free skill unlocks and one free elite skill unlock. She's also eligible for the title "Kind of a Big Deal" if she wants to wear it, and there's a Miniature Captain Greywind available.

Nothing game-breaking, nothing that would make new players buy GW1 just to keep up. Just nice stuff.

Let see next expansion (and its an expansion this time!) is released later this year right! So 6mths maybe more, I'm being generous. That we have the wait for GW2.... ummm 2 yrs.
Crap if I don't wanna grind I should just stop playing for the 2yrs there is no new chapters!

I don't grind and I have a few maxed/ near maxed/ and half filled titles, So I'm sure in 2 yrs of game play I'll be able to do something that will effect the HOM

That is SUCH a good point! How many times have we seen players build up in their mind what some new feature is going to be? Then, when it arrives, it doesn't live up to their imagination, so they set these boards afire with weeks of flaming.

From now on, I will expect absolutely nothing spectacular from the HoM.

Also, I will sign up for this pledge now:

I promise never to say these words: "I paid $185 for all three games plus the expansion. I have the right to cry like a little girl how this (insert feature) didn't live up to my expectations".

bah here i go again - you know whats comming

Heroes are born in the crucible of conflict and tempered in the flames of battle. Their deeds shine throughout history as a beacon of hope to those who must rise to defend the world in ages to come, becoming part of the legend of the land. The legends forged within Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and the Eye of the North will not be forgotten in the future world of Guild Wars 2.

Your deeds from the original Guild Wars campaigns will be commemorated in the Eye of the North expansion in your Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments will reflect the achievements you earn in Eye of the North as well as those earned in Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. You will even be able to show off your hall to friends. Then, when Guild Wars 2 arrives, each of these monuments will correspond to special features your Guild Wars 2 characters can "inherit" from your own legendary past, giving you access to exclusive titles, companions , weapons, attire, and miniatures. These inherited items are unique: there is no other way within Guild Wars 2 to acquire them.

This feature will not allow characters to be transferred between Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2. However, it will allow character names to be reserved and a character linked to a Guild Wars character will inherit some of the original character's accomplishments.

It will not support transfer of armor, characters, or gold. However, acquiring some armors in GW1 may confer benefits in GW2 via the Hall of Monuments

So CAN be taken:
-Some titles
-Char Names
-Benifits from some armors
-benifits from some weapons (I say candycane skins etc, but thats just my opinions)
-some mini's
-Heros

CANT take:
-armor
-weapons
-Money
-toons
-no actual items

---------
bear in mind that it describes that you will recive Unique weapons if you make a monument to something (titles, weapons, armor, mini's) it does NOT say that you will get the SAME weapons.

P.S
why is it every time i post tis info that thread always disapears...hmmmmm

From PC Gamer Magazine, May 2007 Page 029 insert titled Hall of Monuments:
=======================
"the Hall of Monumnets will act like a family inheritance in Guild Wars 2,"

(snip)

For example, special weapons your earned in Guild Wars 1 may be in a display case in your Hall of Monuments, and your Guild Wars 2 character will be able to take them out and use them."
=======================

First, everyone should buy the magazine.

Second, the article tends to refute your statements above. While I do not expect that any actual item will be able to be brought across, perhaps a "representation" will be. I cited a Chaos Axe in a previous post; it's possible that you'll be able to grab your great-grandmother's Chaos Axe, which in GW2 will look much nicer and have attributes in line with GW2. It will not be the same Axe, but will be a reminder of the item you owned in GW1.

This probably won't happen with all items; most likely common skinned items will be grouped together into a single skin. For example, all Hammers might be grouped together into a single skin, with the exception of a Mursaat Hammer, which might have a different skin.

All speculation, of course.

There are two game lines I have ever invested more than $100.00 in: GW and Neverwinter Nights. In the latter case, while they have been very inclusive of player participation in the creative process, one still needs to be able to buy 10 to 12 grand in programs in order to actually be expressive in the game. I will never be able to do this, but at least this is where the elitism ends. In the case of GW, I have invested over $200.00 for two accounts, both with factions preview and one Factions Collectors.

I enjoyed playing the PvE game despite its having absolutely no role-playing aspects to it whatsoever. Having been a role-player for over 30 years, I feel quite competent at determining when something qualifies. I have seen very few computer games that do so, and merely chalk GW up as another industry wannabe on that account. But they are in the company of a lot of really great adventuring games, so what.

I notice the economy seems to have improved somewhat. I have not played again long enough to see if it is worth staying around for. It is difficult to do so. I have played all the way through the Fire Islands. With a Prophecies Mesmer I henched the Fire Islands up to, but not including the last mission. With my monk, and my original Fitz I completed everything except LDD.

I have never enjoyed PvP. The only uniform I have ever worn I wore proudly in the United States Army and was discharged honorably with Good Conduct. I chose my colors in GW to express myself, no one else. I resented and still find disgusting that Factions was specifically designed to coerce me into destroying my self expression, force me to put my uniform on others or wear theirs, or be denied game content. I already had no interest in the PvP world of elitist braggarts and loudmouthed pricks which I experienced in any arena I ever visited, and hence generally chose not to bother with much PvP.

Out of disgust, maybe 8 or 9 months ago, I destroyed everything I had: All of my greens, all of my characters, all of my gold, etc. Because of Factions I have never purchased Nightfall. I have been tempted to consider it, but understand it is even less for casual players than was Factions or Prophecies. Further, the worst aspect of this game is having to spend hours every day running out the door of a site to kill 30 or 50 birds, some trees, a few imps, a bunch of trolls, or maybe some sand dragons pick up the remains run back in and do it again. And for all of you who have never paid taxes, that is called a JOB. It’s assembly line gold getting, and why – because in order to get anything you want you have to buy it, or spend 500 times longer farming for it. (This is especially true for casual players denied access to play content areas.) If someone wants to spend their fantasy life on a payroll assembly line they don't need entertainment just get another job.

This is what I remember, and I am still finding out how much is still this way. So far, I am only back because the pictures are pretty and it is something where I can kill a few bad guys once in awhile. But I have not been convinced it’s something I should invest another couple hundred dollars into or that I should recommend any one else to. (Which btw, is called begging the question in case someone as important as Gaile should happen to notice this.)

If you're content to play just for fun, and not to seek out rewards or acknowledgements:
1) There really wouldn't be much to dedicate a monument to, would there? The point is to carry over great, time-consuming acheivements to GW2 (so that the time spent on them is not somehow "lost" when you transfer games and start anew). If you're just playing and you haven't done much to speak of, besides the storyline, which basically everyone does at some point...it'd be hard to dedicate a monument to. But...
2) This seems fine to me. You've played the game for however long, not seeking out acheivements, and just having fun. That's great if that's your playstyle, and it also means that, come GW2, you wouldn't (based on your track record) put too much stock in the HoM anyway, as collecting titles and acheivements to "show off" doesn't seem high on your priority list.
Conversely, the people who do find enjoyment in showing off titles and the like would be those most concerned with keeping said time-consuming acheivements in the new game, so it all works out.
3) Even still, you have plenty of time left to work on the protector titles, which are as non-grindy as you can get. Minipets, weapons, and possibly headgear from festivals will transfer as well, so there are plenty of relatively nonexpensive things you could collect that you could put in your monument.

I'll reiterate this.

If you don't want the Hall to reward "grind," then what would you suggest?

That you get a reward for beating the game? For having a pet? For waking up in the morning?

Accomplishments in a video game will always be linked to either grind, or total dumb luck. Like the Hall rewarding people that have had a rare Stygian Reaver drop in pre-searing Ascalon. Well, whooptie-doo. You haven't "earned" jack. You've just been a tool. Let's erect a statue of you in the Hall of Freakin' Monuments because you got to level 20!
